Everyone is Welcome!

Retreats are an ideal opportunity to take time out from our busy everyday lives and enjoy time to engage in meditation, letting go of our daily concerns to focus on training our mind and furthering our spiritual development in the peace and tranquillity of KMC Plymouth.

Everyone is welcome at our retreats and if this is your first time attending a particular event, there will be plenty of experienced meditators present who will be only too pleased to help and advise you. Beginners are most welcome.

Generally you can attend as many or few of the sessions in a retreat as you choose but we recommend doing as many as you can in order to gain the most benefit.

Our World Peace Café is usually open between sessions for light refreshments and there are plenty of cafes on Mutley Plain if you would like to go out for lunch on a full day retreat.

Learning to Let Go

Half-Day Urban Retreat

Saturday 16th May

10am-1.30pm

Learning to Let Go

This half-day urban retreat gives the opportunity to immerse ourselves in short teachings combined with long guided meditations. We will have the time and space to literally “let go”.

We all have things we do not want to keep in our minds – regrets, disappointments, shame, anger or simply painful memories. It’s easy to understand why we should let go of these things but harder to do. So this practical event will enable us to foster the helpful, positive states of mind which can allow us to finally let go of what ails us.

But, there are also many things, people and places we hold on to, hold near and dear, either not wanting to be parted from them or craving the chance to enjoy them. There is nothing wrong with desiring nice things, to be with nice people or in nice places, but when we understand that the very things we desire and think cause us happiness are often the cause of our unhappiness, we can also let those desires go too. Gently moving away from our old ways of thinking to bring about a new wiser understanding of these things, frees us to enjoy them without the tight, grasping mind which so often eventually causes us pain.

Shelter From The Storm Retreat

Shelter From The Storm Retreat

Sunday 7th June

10am-3.45pm

Refuge Retreat

This is a guided retreat with short teachings and guided meditations.

This event is suitable for everyone, and everyone is welcome. No previous experience is required.

We all seek the comfort, ease and safety of the things, places and people we hold dear. We find solace and acceptance in these, and they are a form of taking refuge from our daily life.

Likewise, we often turn of doctors when we are sick and seek their help to overcome our suffering. On this retreat we can learn to seek refuge from our suffering and difficulties in Buddha, who is like the doctor, his teachings, known as Dharma, which are like the medicine we need, and in the Sangha, our spiritual friends and community, who are like the nurses who help us take the medicine.

In this way we can go for refuge in the Three Jewels of Buddha, Dharma and Sangha which is how Buddhists protect themselves from suffering, now and in the future. With deep experience of this practice, we stop worrying and embrace a rich and meaningful spiritual life. Through practicing refuge, we gain confidence and strength to make authentic spiritual progress.

In this guided retreat, Resident Teacher at KMC Plymouth, Gen Kelsang Dragden will take us on a journey to explore and deepen our experience and faith in the inner protection we gain from taking refuge in the Three Jewels.

Silence In the City – Day Retreat

Guided Silent Day Retreat

Saturday 26th September

10am-3.30pm

Silence In The City

These retreat sessions will be guided, and include short teachings are given during the sessions.

This is rare opportunity to engage in a beautiful full day of silent retreat at KMC Plymouth. In the heart of the city, we will find the silent heart of inner peace.

The meditations on this day retreat will be guided by Resident Teacher and ordained Kadampa Buddhist monk, Gen Kelsang Dragden, and are suitable for everyone. No previous experience is needed.

Gen Dragden will guide us in meditations specifically to train our mind in the ability to concentrate, reduce the internal chatter of our mind and give us the freedom to access and enjoy the peace, stillness and settling of our mind. Silent retreat is a unique experience in our modern world, and a fantastic opportunity to enjoy a deep peace and tranquillity.

What Does It Mean to Attend a Silent Retreat?

Retreat is an opportunity to step away from our busy lives to focus on meditation in a quiet and calm environment which enables us to let go of our day-to-day concerns and instead focus inwards. It is a powerful means of supporting our experience and development of spiritual practices which is suitable for everyone for try. This retreat will follow the usual format of guided meditations with plenty of time to focus our minds and enjoy the process.

However, during this specific day retreat we will add the element of silence: that is not talking during or between meditation sessions. There are many and huge benefits to keeping silence during retreat: these include experiencing a stronger elimination of distracting thoughts, a deeper experience of the awareness of our own mind and though, and an improved experience of the meditations.

It is a wonderful experience to engage in silent retreat and we can use the peaceful time between sessions to read (please do use the books in our library situated at the top of the entrance ramp), or to contemplate the teachings we have received and watch our mind, absorbing ourselves into the lessons of the day.

Can I Not Speak at All?

During the retreat we ask that you refrain from any unnecessary speech in the centre café whilst keeping complete silence in the meditation room itself. Please feel free to use the meditation room between meditation sessions for silent reading and contemplation.

It is amazing how much we can communicate with each other just by using facial expressions, mouthing a word or pointing with our fingers, so please don’t be put off if someone communicates with you in this way.

If you have any problems or questions during the day, please do reach out to our centre volunteers who can talk with you in a separate area and who will be only too pleased to help you.

When it comes to ordering a coffee in our World Peace Café and maybe even treating yourself to a slice of homemade cake, please keep you voice as quiet as possible and refrain from any unnecessary conversation. Doing so will really help you maintain a peaceful, happy mind during the event.

Can I Bring a Packed Lunch?

Yes, by all means but please be aware that we cannot offer any refrigeration facilities or heat food for you. You can use our café area to eat your lunch.

Of course, you can go out to the many food outlets around Mutley Plain during the breaks but to gain the most from this day of silent retreat, we would encourage you to remain within the centre and enjoy this rare opportunity to forget the everyday hustle and bustle of life and immerse yourself in the experience of retreat.

Please do get in touch with us about this event if you have any questions at all. You can contact us via the online form on the link button below or email us direct at info@meditationinplymouth.org
